GraduateCenterLMU Workshop for Doctoral Candidates and Postdocs

One of the major challenges in working with AI is the efficient and reflective integration of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT - as well as other AI tools specifically developed for research, such as SciSpace or NotebookLM - into one's own work and research processes. This requires, on the one hand, a fundamental understanding of the various available language models and their respective strengths and weaknesses. On the other hand, it is crucial to know the wide range of functions offered by AI tools and to be able to apply them purposefully to one's specific tasks and workflows.

This workshop is aimed at participants who already possess basic knowledge of AI applications and would now like to explore the diverse functionalities of different tools in more depth. Its goal is to enable participants to make informed decisions about which functions and tools are best suited for particular research or writing tasks. A key focus will also be on how AI tools can be integrated into individual workflows without undermining one's own role as author or researcher.

Workshop topics:

  • Differences between various large language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Mistral, or DeepSeek
  • Specific functions of LLMs such as deep research, reasoning, and canvas modes, and their appropriate use cases
  • Creating personalized functions within LLMs (e.g., GPTs [ChatGPT], Agents [Mistral], or Spaces [Perplexity])
  • In-depth overview of different research tools and their specific functionalities (including Research Rabbit, SciSpace, Connected Papers, Elicit)
  • Detailed exploration of AI-supported methods for analyzing and systematizing literature
  • Effective prompting of LLMs and developing prompts that foster individual authorship and independent research
  • Integration of AI tools into individual workflows
