GraduateCenterLMU Workshop for Doctoral Candidates

As a researcher you are trained to communicate your research results to fellow academics from the same field. But what if your audience is a group of interested laymen, a school class of teenagers or a science journalist? How do you make your science relatable to them? In this workshop, we will work on how to pitch your research to different target audiences using a simple yet effective framework. In several small group exercises, you will shape your narrative and learn from your peers. The tools and techniques are not limited to external audiences - they will also help you improve your scientific presentations and writing.

Workshop topics:

  • Research communication using the ABT framework
  • Highlighting the societal relevance of your research
  • Adjusting research stories to different target audiences
  • Techniques for improving your research stories (analogies, anecdotes etc.)
