GraduateCenterLMU Workshop for Doctoral Candidates and Postdocs
AI tools for research and writing are currently the subject of intense and sometimes controversial debate. Developments in this field are rapid and often difficult to navigate. In addition to LLMs such as ChatGPT, there are now numerous AI applications specifically designed for academic purposes. These include helpful tools for literature research and evaluation, for supporting feedback processes, and for revising and refining texts.
This workshop approaches the topic from different angles. First, participants will gain a better understanding of how language-based AI models work. This is essential for critically and appropriately assessing AI-generated results. Second, participants will explore different functions of LLMs as well as other AI-supported tools designed specifically for academic purposes. Throughout the workshop, oportunity will be given to reflect on how AI tools can be used without compromising authorship or violating professional standards of research and academic writing.
Workshop topics:
- Functionality of language-based generative AI models (Large Language Models)
- The potential and risks of using AI in research and academia
- AI guidelines in research and academia
- Basics of correct prompting
- Introduction to key AI tools (including ChatGPT and other LLMs, tools for searching, analyzing and systematizing literature)
- Individual testing of the tools and joint reflection of their possible applications
Language of workshop: English
Target group: Doctoral candidates and postdocs of LMU Munich (the number of participants is limited)
Certificate of attendance: Participants will receive a certificate of attendance from the GraduateCenterLMU.
