GraduateCenterLMU Workshop for Doctoral Candidates

As a researcher you are trained to communicate your research results to fellow academics from the same field. But what if your audience is a group of interested laymen, a school class of teenagers or a science journalist? How do you make your science relatable to them? In this workshop, we will take a deep dive into pitching your research to different target audiences using a simple yet effective framework. In several small group exercises, you will shape your narrative, learn from, and present to your peers. The tools and techniques are not limited to external audiences - they will also help you improve your scientific presentations and writing.

Workshop topics:

  • Research communication using the ABT framework
  • Highlighting the societal relevance of your research
  • Adjusting research stories to different target audiences
  • Techniques for improving your research stories (analogies, anecdotes etc.)
  • Group exercises and peer feedback
