Application for CRC 1784 InTraC

Thrombosis is the central mechanism driving myocardial infarction, stroke and venous thromboembolism, the most common and deadly cardiovascular diseases, and it also complicates infections and inflammatory disorders. The newly approved Collaborative Research Center (CRC/SFB) 1784, InTraC, hosted at LMU Munich with partners at JGU Mainz, JMU Würzburg, Charité Berlin, the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and Helmholtz Munich, unites basic scientists, clinician-scientists and data experts to investigate thromboinflammation: the dysregulated crosstalk between the immune system and the clotting system.

Our mission is to advance the mechanistic understanding of the reciprocal interplay between thrombosis and inflammation, and to translate these insights into precise diagnostics and targeted therapeutics. InTraC is based at the Großhadern campus, one of Europe’s most vibrant translational hubs, with state-of-the-art infrastructure including the new ICON building, advanced imaging (CT, MRI, PET), intravital microscopy, large-animal disease models, and bioinformatics expertise through Helmholtz Munich.

For its part, InTraC unites internationally leading scientists across thrombosis, immunity, multiOmics, targeted therapeutics, and translational medicine, working together in a single coordinated consortium. PhD candidates and postdocs join a research programme that combines outstanding mechanistic expertise with a clear translational agenda, from molecular discovery in Part A to disease-oriented validation in Part B, supported by two central platforms: an integrated data and AI service (Z01, with Helmholtz Munich) and a large-animal disease-model and imaging platform (Z02). Early-career researchers are actively embedded in the use of these facilities and datasets, work directly with clinician-scientists on unmet clinical needs, and benefit from a family-friendly, equal-opportunity environment with international recruitment and mobility. Beyond Munich, InTraC researchers exchange with the DFG-funded Graduate School Thrombo-Inflame (GRK 3190) at JMU Würzburg through joint seminars, shared methodological training, and inter-site exchanges.

• PhD and Postdoctoral positions across 18 interdisciplinary research projects at LMU Munich and partner institutions.
• Up to two one-year fellowships per year (Pre-Doctoral and Pre-Postdoctoral tracks) for outstanding international candidates, with a performance-based transition into a funded position.
• A structured qualification programme through the Integrated Research Training Group ProTraC, embedded in the Munich Medical Research School (MMRS). The programme provides a monthly international lecture series, a journal club, basic and advanced training modules, an annual InTraC retreat, biennial summer schools, and an international thromboinflammation symposium held twice per funding period. Structured supervision through Thesis Advisory Committees (TACs), transferable-skills and career-development training, an Early Career Researcher Fund, and support in the transition to postdoctoral, clinician-scientist, or industry careers round out the offer.
• Mandatory lab rotations, advanced training modules (incl. bioinformatics/AI, large-animal research, clinical therapeutics, IP & technology transfer), and a collaborative, translational research environment.

We welcome applicants with a Bachelor, Master, or Medical Degree. Candidates with a medical background (MD) are explicitly encouraged to apply, including for the dedicated clinician-scientist and pre-postdoctoral tracks.
