Welcome to the application form for the LMU Master of Arts "Environment and Society" program at LMU Munich.

Please read the following application instructions carefully.

Before filling out the form, ensure that you have all necessary documents for the application. For this program, the required documents are:

  1. a curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum);
  2. a copy of your bachelor's degree certificate (180 ECTS points or equivalent) from programs in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, or engineering sciences with significant thematic overlap with the MA Environment and Society (including, but not limited to: environmental studies, literature, cultural studies, history, sociology, anthropology, geography, political sciences, media studies, geology, biology, architecture, landscape architecture, or civil engineering). Students who have not yet finished their undergraduate studies may apply but can only be accepted on a provisional basis pending the completion of their degree;
  3. a transcript of records showing a grade of at least 2.5 on the German scale (or equivalent);
  • In case the first degree is not yet completed, the transcript of records must show the successful completion of at least 120 ECTS points (or equivalent). The diploma (or equivalent qualification) must be submitted immediately upon receipt.
  • To determine the grade equivalents for degrees obtained outside of Germany, you can use online guidelines or tools.
  • proof of English language proficiency. Accepted certificates are TOEFL (iBT over 95), IELTS (7.0 or above), Duolingo (120 or above), or Cambridge English Language Assessment (C1 Advanced or above). Please note that the validity of most test results expires after two years. If English is your native language or you completed your first degree in English in an English-speaking country, you may submit a statement explaining why you should be exempt from the English test requirement.
  • an original motivational letter in English, no more than 800 words. In the motivational letter you should introduce yourself and explain your motivation and passion for the MA Environment and Society.
  • a writing sample in English or German demonstrating research ability on a topic of environmental relevance (maximum 2,000 words). This can be, but does not have to be, from your previous study program. This writing sample must be fully referenced.

    • The application deadline is 10 March 2025 (for an October 2025 start), at 23:59 CET (GMT+1). This form will close at that point, and you will no longer be able to proceed with your application. To successfully apply to the MA "Environment and Society" make sure you have filled out all required fields, uploaded all relevant documents, and submitted the form before the deadline. Please note that you should receive a confirmation email when the form is successfully submitted.
